PEACE CORPS PREP

From the Program Launch to Now

I learned about FIU's Peace Corps Prep program as a freshman via email announcing an event that would launch the program. Peace Corps is a program that I have been interested in for years, but had no way of knowing how to join or connect with previous volunteers. Since joining this program: I have attended application workshops, met with multiple Peace Corps Recruiters, and gained a lot of knowledge meeting RPCVs throughout the years.

POST-GRAD PLANS

I graduate in a month and I have been working hard to make plans for the gap year that I want to take before going to grad school. During my gap year, I would like to join the Peace Corps or tutor children in literacy. I would love to gain more experience in community development.

Connecting Alternative Breaks with the Youth Development Sector

I went on 2 separate Alternative Breaks trips which focused on serving disadvantaged at-risk youth. My groups spent the whole week doing service at schools in the area, teaching career building classes, and conducting activities with students after school.

I gained a lot from this issue on a global scale. For example, the orphanage that I volunteered at was ran by 3 adults. The kids there di not receive the adquate attention that they all need. I could tell the the people working in helping professions in Guyana (and Nicaragua) weren't appreciated and were exceedingly overworked. This is the similar case with counselors and social workers in the US.
