EXPERIENCE THROUGHOUT THE YEARS

Experience: Service

Spring 2015

EVENTS

I attended a Sand Mandala creation ceremony during my freshman year.  This was a week long event, where a Mandala was created with sand and then deconstructed during a ceremony at the end of the week. I had never witnessed something being created with such dedication and service before. I admired the monks intense focus on their goal and I could relate the same to aspects of my own culture.

WORLD CIVILIZATION

Course Description:
"Examines key developments of major world civilizations in a comparative perspective."

I still use knowledge that I gained in this class daily. I enjoyed how the aspects of religion and history in different parts of the world were brought together. There was a part in the class where the term globalization made so much sense to me. I found it amusing yet sad that the fleas from a dynasty in Asia were a key transport of the Bubonic Plague throughout the world.

ALTERNATIVE BREAKS TRIPS

Since I was a freshman, I have gone on a service group trip every year during my school breaks. I have worked in a long-term homeless women shelters in Washington, D.C during my winter break. During a spring break, I worked with at-risk youth in Nicaragua. And this past summer, I worked with disadvantaged youth in schools and orphanages in Guyana.

Each of these service trips showed me how much children outside of the United States were in need of things that seemed like a right or a given in this country. I always get inspired to go beyond after these trips and I hope that my future reflects the reality of that inspiration.

I'll never forget the beautiful souls that I met at Joshua's House.jpg

AB SITE LEADER

After doing 3 trips within this program, I pursued the position of a Site Leader. My group will be heading to the Galapagos Islands in May, where we will be working on removing invasive species on the island and also promoting growth of the native plants as well.

This is my first environmental trip and despite my past experience within the organization, I still find myself learning new things. I am looking forward to my final trip with aB.
